Peri-implant diseases: prevalence, diagnosis and management
Abstract:
Late oral implant failures have been correlated with peri-implant diseases. Consensus conferences have identified several diagnostic criteria, including the presence of plaque, suppuration, bleeding on probing, probing depth of more than 5 mm and radiographic bone loss of more than 3 threads, to define peri-implantitis.
There is no consensus in the management of peri-implant diseases. Evidence suggests that peri-implant mucositis can be successfully treated if detected early and combined with effective non-surgical therapy, while several studies suggested that non-surgical approach was not effective for the treatment of peri-implantitis. Different surgical treatment modalities have been proposed to treat peri-implantitis. However, the outcome of therapy of peri-implantitis is still considered unpredictable.
Learning Objectives:
- The attendees will be able to understand the etiology of peri-implant diseases and analyze in depth the causes of peri-implant marginal bone loss.
- The attendees will be able to recognize the prevalence of peri-implant diseases and develop working knowledge of evaluating peri-implant soft and hard tissues.
- The attendees will be able to revise their knowledge on different treatment approaches (non-surgical and surgical techniques) of peri-implant diseases.
