Abstract
Surgical Management of Impacted Canines Maxillary canines are considered to be the second most commonly impacted teeth after wisdom teeth. The location of the permanent canine at the angle of the mouth is strategically important in maintaining the symmetry and harmony of the dental arches. The canine impaction is often diagnosed during routine dental examination, often, after both functional and aesthetic impairments have occurred. Early intervention is very important and requires a multidisciplinary-care management. This presentation focuses on the varying surgical techniques in managing impacted canines and consider other factors such as age, social circumstances, dental phobia and systemic diseases that may affect the treatment outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
- Distinguish the difference between impacted and ectopic canines.
- Recognize how complex treatment planning may involve a range of dental specialists.
- Appraise the various surgical techniques used and how other factors such as social, psychological and medical, can affect the surgical approach.
